Moscow: Lend a Helping Hand

HOPE worldwide – Russia regularly delivers groceries to 113 needy pensioners and WWII veterans through their “Old Friends’ Home” program.

Help is currently provided to poor pensioners and WWII veterans living in the Marfino, North Chertanovo and Ramenki regions of Moscow.

Some of these invalids remember experiencing incredible difficulties during the Leningrad Blockade. The oldest lady in the program will turn 96 this summer!!! We visit those who can no longer walk because of their weak health in order to build friendships with them and help them with their basic domestic needs.

Loneliness and a disconnection from the rest of society are big problems among the elderly in Moscow. Many have gotten used to idea of spending the rest of their lives all alone. Most of them are WWII veterans, retired laborers, and pensioners living completely without help.

The elderly portion of Russia's population perceives most changes in society as troubling and difficult. They cannot adapt their mindsets to the new culture, which creates physiological problems in addition to other difficulties. There are also some pensioners who don’t receive any support whatsoever from their relatives, financial or otherwise. Many of these pensioners are invalids and need special help because they cannot even walk.

“The Old Friends’ Home” helps seniors adapt to society and feel loved and supported by each other and by their community. Because of this charitable program, lonely pensioners and WWII veterans are able to gather together to celebrate holidays and anniversaries, to play games (like bingo and chess), to sing songs and watch their favorite movies, and to talk to one another.

Many thanks to Alexandr Zaborin and the “ÈÊÑÑ” company, who support our efforts to deliver groceries and other goods to seniors in the Marfino and North Chertanovo districts and hot meals to seniors in the Ramenki district.
